The Surgical Experience

After the initial consult, once all the major decisions for your procedure have been finalized, the next step is the preoperative period. Dr. Weinberg’s staff, including his registered nurse, will go over in detail the schedule of events leading up to your surgery and on the day of  surgery.  Always conscious of all the factors that will insure the best outcome for his patients, Dr. Weinberg will give you detailed instructions to minimize any complications and insure the best possible outcome of your surgery.

On the day of surgery Dr. Weinberg, and his staff of board certified anaesthetisis and registered nurses will take you through the surgical process with plenty of assistance to insure you feel comfortable and at ease. The surgery takes about one and a half hours and is done under general anaesthetic. Immediately after surgery you will be closely observed and monitored by Dr. Weinberg, the anaesthetist and our registered nurses. You will wake up and recover in our beautiful, airy and sun filled recovery room with a view of the back garden! You may require medication to minimize discomfort. Sometimes people are anxious about this aspect of cosmetic surgery.

It is Dr. Weinberg’s mandate to insure as comfortable a recovery as possible. An innovative device that can be used to insure  the most pleasant Breast Augmentation experience is the Pain Pump. This is a small device the size of one’s hand that contains the pain medication bupivacaine. Tiny tubes implanted in the surgical site during surgery , continuously feed the medication from the device directly to the surgical wound. This continues for the first 24 hours after the surgery, numbing the area such that patients usually require much less, if any ,oral pain medication. The pump can then be disposed of. Only when you are fully recovered will the staff assist you in getting ready to leave the clinic. You will have been given full instructions for the post operative period by the staff prior to surgery, and a complete set of written instructions will be provided upon you departure later that day. You receive detailed instructions regarding dressings and medication, but if you have any questions at all Dr. Weinberg and the clinic staff are always reachable .

Dr. Weinberg prides himself on exceptional availability to his surgical patients during the post op  period, and encourages patients to call immediately  if they have any concerns. His registered nurses are also knowledgeable, available, and ready to help patients through any issues that crop up during  recovery.

Patients are given a tensor bandeau to wear for 6 weeks to keep the implants from riding too high on the chest. The implants will likely descend, often one before the other, t to the appropriate placement on the chest within the first couple of weeks. One can usually return to work in a few days. The breasts are usually sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks.  Physical contact with your breasts may begin in 3 to 4 weeks.  The scars fade over several months to a year.

Important Factors You Should Consider When Choosing Silicone Gel-Filled or Saline-Filled Breast Implants

For many women, breast implant surgery brings great rewards, both physically and emotionally.  However, it is important for you to be aware of the possible risks.

As already mentioned, any reputable surgeon should explain in detail any possible complications or side effects to breast augmentation prior to surgery. The general risks common to most surgical procedures would include such things as bruising, swelling  bleeding, and discomfort among others. Fortunately serious occurrences are uncommon, particularly when surgery is undertaken by a board certified Plastic Surgeon such as Dr. Weinberg.

Issues specific to breast Augmentation include the possibility of additional surgery such as implant removal with or without replacement.
While many women can successfully breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery, breast implants may affect that ability in some individuals, either by reducing or eliminating milk production.

Breast implants can rupture. With Saline implants this results in deflation, and is easily visible. In the case of Gel-filled implants this may be silent and difficult to detect, and may require MRI scanning.

With breast implants screening mammography will require special techniques, and self breast examination may require some practice in order for you  to differentiate the implant from your breast tissue.

Other complications such as  capsular contracture or scarring, malposition, asymmetry and wrinkling, while uncommon, need to be discussed prior to surgery.
